BOSTON (WHDH) -- Bobby Valentine's ride with the Red Sox ended with the worst record for the ball club in nearly 50 years.

After they fired him Thursday, he took a bike ride around the Charles River -- avoiding questions. But when Bobby V came back home, he told 7News he has only one regret: the season that ended with the sox winning just 69 games, losing 93.

“I wish it went differently. I wish we had a reverse record, I regret that,” Valentine told 7’s Susan Tran.

There was a big news conference welcoming Valentine to the Sox last December. He was brought to Boston at a time when the Sox were mired in clubhouse controversy.

He was an experienced hand who could deal with big-name players, but things just got worse. And Valentine says there's no need to spread blame.

“It was a very difficult season and I take full responsibility for our failures,” Valentine said.

When asked if he got the support he needed from upper management he was generous with praise.

“the ownership of this team if terrific, let me tell you. John Henry flew up from Florida to make sure he was here in person to be with me. You know, Tom and Larry, no one cares more than them,” Valentine said.

In the end, Bobby V said he wasn't set up to fail he just didn't succeed.

“I was given the opportunity to manage in the greatest city in the world with the greatest fans in the world. What are you going to do? It just didn't work. It’s a life experience. I wish it went differently,” Valentine said.
