BOSTON (WHDH) -- It’s been a tumultuous two years for the Boston Red Sox.

With Bobby Valentine out the door there is already talk about who will replace him. If Ben Cherington and the Red Sox get their wish, a familiar face will be making his return to Fenway Park.

Blue Jays manager John Farrell is expected to be top the Red Sox’s top choice to replace Valentine.

Farrell served as the Red Sox pitching coach under Terry Francona from 2006-2010 before he left to take the job in Toronto.

The Red Sox tried to hire Farrell last season, but the compensation package the Blue Jays asked for in return was too rich for the Sox.

Farrell has one year left on his deal with the Blue Jays.

Some other potential candidates include:

-- Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Dave Martinez
-- Toronto Blue Jays first base coach Torey Lovullo
-- Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux
-- Cleveland Indians interim manager Sandy Alomar Jr.
-- Baltimore Orioles third base coach DeMarlo Hale
