Spending in Mass. Senate race neared $78M
BOSTON (AP) -- Democrat Elizabeth Warren and Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown combined spent nearly $78 million in their hotly-contested Massachusetts Senate race that ended with Warren's victory.
That's according to summaries of the latest campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.
The spending totals will continue to rise as final campaign bills are paid.
Brown spent about $37 million on his unsuccessful re-election bid. The campaign reported $464,000 cash on hand at the end of November, but the campaign said $150,000 to $200,000 would actually be left after some final bills are paid.
Warren's campaign spent $40.5 million through the last reporting period. The senator-elect sent a letter earlier this week to supporters asking for additional donations to cover what it said was a small campaign debt.
