Orem, UTAH (WHDH) -- A man called police and said his home was being burglarized, but when help arrived, there didn’t seem to be anything wrong.

Bruce Gardner’s phone rang just before 9 a.m. The caller ID showed a familiar number- his own house!

"I knew nobody was home, so I answered it,” said Gardner.

What he heard on the other end was so startling, he immediately left work and called police. No one was talking but the sounds were worth a million words.

"He could hear some banging around, some rifling around, some scratching,” said Sgt. Craig Martinez of the Orem Police Department.

"My mind immediately went to you know, I'm being robbed,” said Gardner.

Police converged on his Orem residence, but turned up nothing after searching the house. The doors and windows were locked and there was no evidence of a disturbance.

"I've heard of some pretty strange things. This ranks right up there with something that I've never heard happening before,” said Sgt. Martinez.

To make it even more strange, Gardner and the police couldn't find the cordless home phone that had made the call.

So the home owner did a little digging. He went to the backyard and called back the number that had placed the mysterious call.

"I could hear the ringing. I started going towards the sound and I found it out here in the garden,” said Gardner.

Turns out, the culprit was Maya, the family's 4-year-old lab. She had taken the phone which was left outside and made it her own personal line.

"In the midst of chewing on it, she happened to hit redial, called the man's cell phone and then the dog had buried the phone in the backyard in the garden,” said Sgt. Martinez.

Mystery solved and lesson learned.

"Don't leave things out here, you know, that I don't want eaten up,” said Gardner.

Gardner was relieved that no one was robbing him and now it looks like the worst thing that will happen is a little time for Maya in the dog house.
