Police chase ends in arrest; 1 officer injured
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Police have arrested a man who robbed a U-Haul truck and led police on a high-speed chase through two counties.
The police chase started in Cutler Bay and ended o Southwest 25th Avenue near Flagler Street, Friday afternoon.
According to police, a company who rents U-Haul trucks in Cutler Bay called police after a man took off with one of their trucks.
Police immediately sent out a B.O.L.O. with the suspect and vehicle description. Moments later, police located the truck and stopped the driver. As an officer was going to make contact with the driver, the man turned the wheel towards the officer and fled, causing the box portion of the truck to strike the officer's hand. "There was a uniformed unit that conducted a traffic stop at 186 and the bus way on the U-Haul truck," said Miami-Dade Police Department Detective Aida Fina-Milian. "Once the officer went up to the window to conduct his traffic stop, the subject fled and struck the officer, because he was actually trying to speak to him and as they took off, he hit his hand at that point in time there was no injuries."
The suspect was speeding though traffic and at one point went the wrong way down Flager Street.
After 30 minutes, police managed to stop the truck and asked the driver to get out of the vehicle. The driver refused to get out. Officers were then forced to break a window and dragged the suspect out.
Police have identified the suspect as Darrell Conyers.
An officer was pinned between the U-Haul truck and a police cruiser while taking down the suspect. He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, his condition is unknown.
