Crafty robber cuts through check cashing store wall
NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WHDH) -- Police are searching for the crook who allegedly cut a hole in the wall of a check cashing store and got away with thousands of dollars.
Officials said the thief took off with more than $10,000 from the Advance America store in North Miami Beach.
A businessman who works near the crime scene said the perpetrator broke into the vacant space located next to the store. "From there they broke into the cash advance [store]," he said.
Authorities said the thief cut a hole in the sheetrock wall on the adjoining abandoned business. "They were able to cut into the safe," said North Miami Beach Police Sgt. Jason Ochoa.
The thief got through the opening and then went to the back of the business, where he used what is possibly a power tool to open the establishment's metal safe. He then took thousands of dollars in cash.
Police said surveillance cameras did not catch the perpetrator. They also indicated they never received a phone call when the alarm went off. "They have an ADT alarm, but the police department was never notified of an alarm going off at that time, so we never responded," said Ochoa.
Officials took many crime scene photos in the hopes someone comes forward and gives them the tip they need to catch this thief.
