SHIRLEY, N.Y. (WHDH) -- A New York man had a close call while outside washing his car. He was nearly hit by a metal clipboard that fell from the sky.

The clipboard was jammed with aviation paperwork and a runway map of a nearby airport. The FAA is trying to figure out where it came from. The man can’t believe it didn’t hit him.

“Wow, what if I got hit by this? It’s a very sharp piece of metal. With the velocity that it was coming down, you know, that would have stuck a hole in my head. I wouldn’t be here right now,” said

The FAA said pilots do not have to file a report when personal items fall from their planes, only when parts of the plane fall off. However, they said they want to know who the clipboard belongs to.
