CLINTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- Two clerks at a Cumberland Farms in Clinton fought back when a would-be robber doused them with lighter fluid.

The 911 call came in around 10:30 Tuesday night; a clerk at a Clinton Cumberland farms tackled the would-be robber.

In the call to 911, the suspect can be heard crying for help.

Police say it started when Brian Dziczek walked into the store and doused two employees with lighter fluid. He had a lighter in his pocket.

“What his intent was after he put the lighter fluid on the employees, I don’t know,” said Sgt. Brian Coyne, Clinton Police Department.

That's when the clerks fought back, fearing for their safety.

“They were very shaken up when we got there, anybody would be. They were surprised and shocked by the whole thing at first. They said it was kind of a joke,” said Sgt. Coyne.

Police say Dziczek was wearing a mask at the time of the attempted robbery.

He’s facing several of charges including assault with intent to murder.

“He said that he owed some people money and he has some family and owes some certain people money and that he did it for that reason,” said Sgt. Coyne.

His father's girlfriend, who lives with Dziczek, says the self-employed barber had never had any run-ins with the law before.

“He’s just a very good person. I don’t know what’s going on with him,” said Mary Naughton, who lives with the suspect.

Police are investigating whether there was a possible getaway driver involved.
