UXBRIDGE, Mass. (WHDH) -- A man reportedly driving a stolen vehicle was killed in a head-on collision following a police chase in Uxbridge Friday, according to the Worcester district attorney.

The driver of the other vehicle, Anthony Southwick, 30, of Uxbridge was transported to hospital in Worcester with serious injuries.

“My son’s doing a lot better. All the injuries are from the waist down. He’s got a lot of broken bones, a lot of scratches,” said Mark Southwick, Anthony’s father. “Luckily things happened the way they did and my granddaughter wasn’t picked up yet.”

Police first observed the Ford Explorer in nearby Northbridge and determined the driver allegedly stole the vehicle out of Rhode Island. They attempted to stop the vehicle but it continued south on Route 122.

Uxbridge Police picked up the pursuit after the vehicle crossed the town line.

Police allowed the vehicle to pull away before the SUV crossed into the northbound lane and crashed head-on with the pickup truck.

“When I came out and I saw them and there was black smoke rising from the pickup truck, you just didn’t know where one started and the other one ended,” a witness said.

The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Uxbridge Police, Northbridge Police are investigating the crash along with the regional accident reconstruction team.

Anthony Southwick was recovering in the hospital Friday night.
