MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (WHDH) -- A family made a great escape thanks to the help of a Good Samaritan.

The family got out of their Suburban just moments before it burst into flames on Interstate 495.

Sarah Batchelder said she was driving behind the Suburban and noticed flames coming from underneath it. She said that she and other drivers beeped their horns to get the driver to stop.

“Pulled over and saw four children come out of the car with the mom and father had a 2-month-old baby,” said Batchelder. “I immediately got out and was calling 911.”

Batchelder said she stayed with the children, who were 11 years old and younger.

“I think they were scared initially, but once they were sitting down -- we as the adults were far more nervous than they were. I think they were keeping us calm,” said Batchelder.

Batchelder said the family was in the process of moving from Springfield, Mass. to Maine. The SUV was packed with clothes and personal belongings.

She said the children were remarkable.

“The couple times they had said, ‘Oh my stuffed animal is gone’ another sibling would say ‘But we’re here,’” said Batchelder. “One of the little kids said, ‘Oh you’re a hero’ and I said, ‘I’m not a hero.’ I think most people would do the same and I just said, ‘Promise me you’ll pay it forward when you see someone that needs help.’”

Batchelder works for the Gap. All of the family’s clothing will be replaced.
