FALL RIVER, Mass. (WHDH) -- Pieces of roof from a Fall River school littered a nearby neighborhood after Wednesday night’s storm.

A shabby tarp covers a 40-foot section of roof that blew off the Resiliency Preparatory School in Fall River, scaring the daylights out of neighbors who live nearby.

“I was shocked. I didn’t know what it was. I said ‘What is that?’ and they said ‘That’s the roof from the school,’” said Robyn Brube-Goncalo.

The wind-blown community was covered with debris on Thursday.

A nearby Victorian home was crushed by a massive tree that fell on top of it and its owner.

“I touched that [branch] from my bed. I had it on the side of my head,” said Evelyn Sirois, whose house was damaged by a tree. “The third and the second floor -- it went through my bedroom ceiling also on the second floor. It’s even cracked the walls on the first floor.”

In Raynham, the Lillie B. Merrill School was also damaged. The first teacher who pulled into the school saw the roof peeling away. Only the cafeteria of the school needed to be shut down.

“School as usual,” said Dr. Jacqueline Forbes, the superintendent of Bridgewater/Raynham Schools. “Lunches will be served in the classrooms. I want to let everybody know that the kitchen is fully functional and they’re already baking cookies in there.”

In Uxbridge and Grafton baking cookies is on hold as workers spent the day lifting downed trees off homes while residents stared in disbelief at the damage and how close they came to disaster.

The superintendent of the Fall River school said they are still assessing the damage. It is not known where the students will go to school on Friday.
