PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) -- A Plymouth police officer’s gun is now missing after he left it in the bathroom of the Wareham District Court.

The Plymouth police captain testified in the trial of a former officer charged with attacking a man outside a bar.

John Rogers came to the courthouse in Wareham when the trial began Monday. Police say as he was using the restroom by the entrance when he misplaced his gun.

“I would say no [I don’t have any sympathy for Rogers] I think it’s irresponsible,” said Maryann Brogan.

A witness who was at the courthouse Monday 7News Rogers went to lunch not knowing he didn’t have his gun. When he realized it was missing, he returned to the courthouse, but it was already gone.

State police searched the whole courthouse and did a sweep of the grounds, checking underneath cars in the parking lot. But police and court officers couldn't find Rogers’ weapon.

“This is a revolver. It’s a .357, it’s a five shot, so it’s not a high-capacity weapon. However, it was issued to command staff as a weapon for a desk officer,” said Chief John Botieri, Plymouth Police Department.

It's been missing more than 24 hours.

Wareham police are handling the investigation. They're questioning people who were scheduled to appear in court yesterday.

“When you have criminals coming in and out of court, yeah I would say [it’s a dangerous situation],” said Lisa Hamilton.

Chief Botieri said the situation is an embarrassment to the Plymouth Police Department and will look at disciplining Rogers.
