CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WHDH) -- A Quincy woman was arrested on a charge of assault and battery on a child for allegedly violently injuring a one-year-old female who subsequently died, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone announced Monday.

Aisling McCarthy Brady, 34, of Quincy, was arrested Monday in Quincy on a charge of assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury, according to the district attorney’s office.

“This is an extremely troubling case, where we allege the defendant violently assaulted a one-year-old child, causing a devastating head injury and broken bones,” District Attorney Leone said. “Children are our most vulnerable victims and where, as here, the offender has been entrusted with the care of a child who depends on them, the allegations are all the more egregious.”

Cambridge Police responded to Ash Street on Jan. 14, and found the child to be breathing but unconscious, according to authorities.

The child was taken to Children’s Hospital where she was found to be suffering from subdural and retinal hemorrhaging, and cerebral swelling, according to the district attorney’s office.

The 1-year-old was also observed to have multiple healing bone fracture, and on Jan. 16, the child was pronounced brain dead and subsequently died, according to the district attorney’s office.

The child was allegedly in the care of Brady on Jan. 14.

Through their investigation, including interviews with witnesses, police determined that the Brady had sole custody of and contact with the child during the time that she sustained injuries consistent with abusive head trauma, the district attorney’s office said.

Brady is scheduled to be arraigned in Cambridge District Court Jan. 22.
