Man impersonating cop hits woman with flashlight

WAREHAM, Mass. (WHDH) -- The Wareham community is on edge after a woman was attacked on the side of the road by a man who was impersonating a police officer.
When the woman saw the flashing blue lights, she pulled over. But what she didn't realize was the man walking up to her car wasn't an officer at all.
And now, police want to find the man posing as one of them.
"I don't even know. It was pure terror," the victim said.
It's something we've all been taught; you see a blue flashing light, you pull over. But Wareham Police say you should think twice because someone is pretending to be one of them.
Investigators say a man with an SUV and blue flashing light pulled over a woman on Main Street Saturday night at about 9 and said her taillight was out.
"He had on a fluorescent yellow jacket. Something a police officer on detail would wear. He had mentioned I had a taillight out. I was aware of the situation, my husband had been rear-ended earlier in the week. I again tried to reach for my phone and get a picture of him. He asked me to step out of the car, I went to roll up the window, frightened him. He jumped back a little bit, he swung his flashlight that he had been shining in my face at me, hit me on the side of the head in the face," the victim said.
The woman got away and called police.
The fake cop has drivers on edge and wondering how they would react.
“You never know. You go and you don't stop, and what if it is a police officer and then how do you explain that situation,” one woman said.
Police say first of all, like this woman did, follow your instincts. If something feels wrong it probably is.
“Pull over into a well-lit area, place where there’s public, call 911 explain the situation you’re being pulled over. Maybe that can help you out,” said Lt. Walsh.
Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call police.
