NORWELL, Mass. (WHDH) -- Three teenagers were rescued from a Norwell swamp Tuesday night.

Their disappearance prompted an all out search in the woods. Once they were located, it took hours for the teens to be rescued from a deep, slushy swamp.

“After the first hour I’m like, ‘I’m going to kill him.’ Then you get that panic and then you’re just sheer terror,” said Robin Holler, whose 14-year-old son Jake was rescued from the woods.

Robin Holler said the three friends were in the woods playing a game of survivor. They got lost and it got dark.

“They had coats and sneakers, my son had boots and a sweatshirt,” said Robin Holler.

The boys left their cell phones behind because they didn’t want them to get wet.

Robin Holler’s husband spent two hours searching the woods.

“My husband came back and he’s like ‘I heard their voices.’ I’m like, ‘Are you sure? Are you sure?’ I didn’t believe him,” said Robin Holler.

The boys were on a small island surrounded by icy water.

“There were about 150 yards from any type of land,” said Chief Theodore Ross of the Norwell Police Department. “The water was out chest high.”

Rescuers tried to use a boat, but the brush was too thick. Rescuers put on survival suits and walked through the water.

“It was about an inch thick of ice I had to smash through,” said Bill Milne of the Norwell Fire Department. “We put them in survival suits themselves and walked them out with us.”

“The kids must have been freezing because in the suit it was starting to get a little bit cold. They did a great job. They stayed huddled up together and kept each other warm,” said Harry Merritt of the Norwell Fire Department.

Hours later the three families were reunited.

“I’m really happy. That was really scary because I’m super close with my brother,” said Sabrina Smith, whose brother was rescued from the woods.

“I’m exhausted. I’m relieved. I’m so happy though, there’s no -- at this point it just puts life in perspective…I don’t even care, I’m not mad at him. I was just so thankful,” said Robin Holler.

The three 14-year-old boys were rushed to the hospital and treated for exposure. They have all been released. One boy did suffer from frost bite, but they are all expected to be okay.

Temperatures were in the 20’s on Tuesday night.
