MILFORD, Mass. (WHDH) -- An otherwise small fender bender that happened in a Milford parking lot, changed two families lives forever.

As a single mother, Kim Kerwell had a lot on her mind on her way to work. She didn't know if her two kids were going to have much of a Christmas this year. Distracted, she rear ended a woman in a parking lot.

"Why now, why?” asked Kerwell. “How could this be happening right now? I couldn't believe this just happened. I’ve been asking for prayers. I don't have the money."

Sherene Borr was driving the other car that Kim hit. But she didn't get upset.

"I could tell when I met her that something was wrong, and she shared her story with me,” said Borr.

"I don't know when I’ll have the money for a deductible or to fix your bumper. I can barely get through Christmas, I haven't even started yet,” said Kerwell.

But the car accident turned out to be the best Chrismas gift Kim could have asked for. Borr’s mom was also a single mother and she remembers the tough times.

“Later on that day, I was just thinking and talking to some friends, and I said you know what it would be a really great idea for us to adopt her and all of our friends and family could help out,” said Borr.

So, Borr, along with family and friends collected items for the home, gift cards to get groceries, and presents for the kids, to make sure they would have something to open on Christmas morning.

For Kerwell, such an amazing act of kindness from a stranger was overwhelming.

“To see her pour her heart out, and text me right away, saying I’m here for you. It was overpowering. I just remember being choked up at work all day,” said Kerwell.

“She and her daughter were praying the Sunday before the accident, that a miracle would happen, and we're helping to make that miracle happen for her,” said Borr.

The two women are now good friends. They text and talk on the phone every day and say that's a gift, that keeps on giving.
