BROCKTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- A woman was killed after witnesses say a driver led police on a dangerous car chase that ended in a multi-vehicle crash.

Seven mangled cars sat in a Brockton intersection while police investigated the crash that killed a woman whose car was crushed.

“I was horrified you could know that some people were seriously hurt,” said Kaitie Lawson, a witness.

People in the area along Quincy and Center Streets described a dizzying scene in the middle of the afternoon.

Cars were tossed everywhere and emergency crews tried to help a woman who was trapped.

Police were already close when the crash happened. Witnesses told 7News the driver was leading police on a chase when he caused the deadly pile up.

I saw the troopers come flying down this street,” said David Ballinger, a witness. “You could see them coming then you heard all the commotion”

With traffic stopped in every direction witnesses say the man who came flying through the intersection got out of his car and tried to run away.

But they say they saw police catch up with him close to the scene.

The pile of cars that's left people shocked and friends of a victim grieving.

“She's a nice lady. A very good girl. Nice lady. Very pretty,” one man said.

Police have not yet released the victim’s name.
