Tropical storm could mean dangerous waves for RI
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Islanders are being warned of high surf, strong waves and dangerous rip currents as Tropical Storm Leslie passes offshore.
The state's Emergency Management Agency said Friday that the ocean conditions could pose a hazard to swimmers and surfers for the next few days.
State officials say breakers of 12 feet are possible in areas with steeply sloped beaches and that big waves mean people should use caution when standing on rocks overlooking the sea.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Leslie is forecast to pass several hundred miles offshore of New England early next week.
