New Bedford store owner fights off would-be thieves

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WHDH) -- It was the second time in as many weeks the owner of a mini market became the victim of an attempted robbery.
Last week Nicholas Dawoud was robbed by two thieves with knives, one put a knife to his wife Clotilde. Those robbers took all the cash. But this time, the Dawoud’s were ready.
When masked men wielding knives rushed into the market looking for money the store owner came out swinging. One would-be thief ran away, but the other got smacked with a stick. Surveillance video shows Nicholas Dawoud losing his stick so he grabbed a shelf and used it as a weapon and whacked the suspect.
“I defend my life, I defend my wife, my business,” said Nicholas Dawoud.
Then neighbors jumped in.
“He’s a good guy. He’s older and we just wasn’t going to let it happen,” said one man.
Nicholas Dawoud brushed off the encounter and said thieves should know not to mess with him.
“I’m okay, I’m ready for another one. No problem,” said Nicolas Dawoud.
One suspect was arrested at the scene. Police said the second suspect is still on the run. It is unclear if the two suspects are the same men who robbed the store last week.
