PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island state police say an Exeter man has been charged for allegedly failing to stop at a red light and striking a police cruiser before trying to flee the scene and hitting the cruiser a second time.

Police say James Hall's vehicle then hit an empty car parked on Broad Street before troopers blocked his path and arrested him at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday.

The 46-year-old Hall disputes allegations that he was trying to flee. He says his flip flop got stuck on the accelerator pedal as he tried to stop after the crash, causing his vehicle hit the cruiser again.

He says he cooperated with police and agreed to tests that showed he had alcohol in his body that was almost twice the legal limit.

Hall was charged with drunk driving and leaving the scene of accident.
