Driver in fatal sidewalk accident may lose license

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) -- The 80-year-old driver who struck and killed a 12-year-old girl on a Smithfield sidewalk may lose his driver's license.
Smithfield police say they will ask the Department of Motor Vehicles to revoke or suspend the license of Thomas Hickey of North Scituate while they continue their investigation of Sunday's crash.
Daniela Heredia of Guatemala was with a group attending a camp at Mater Ecclesiae College. She and other members of the group were walking on a sidewalk along Route 44 at about 3 p.m. Sunday when the car jumped a curb and struck her, knocking her over a guardrail and into a ditch.
Two other girls were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and were released Monday.
No charges have been filed.
