Girl killed others hurt as car runs onto sidewalk

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) -- A 12-year old girl was killed and two others were injured when a car ran off the Putnam Pike in Smithfield and into a group of pedestrians on a sidewalk.
Police tell WPRI-TV that the girl was part of group visiting Mater Ecclesia College from Guatemala.
Police say eight girls and a chaperone were walking on the sidewalk at about 3 p.m. Sunday when the car, driven by an 80-year-old man from North Scituate, struck them.
The 12-year-old was knocked over a guardrail and into a ditch. She was transported to Hasbro Children's Hospital where she died. Two other girls were treated for minor injuries.
Police have not released the names of those involved. The driver was not immediately charged.
