PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) -- A python was captured by environmental police in Plymouth Tuesday after it escaped from someone’s house and bit a man. Luckily, the snake is not poisonous.

There was plenty of excitement in the Plymouth neighborhood as an eight to 10- foot python -- apparently someone's escaped pet -- was located near some bushes.

A father preparing to take family fishing says he was bitten by the snake. He tied a tourniquet around his leg as a precaution.

“When I opened the door, something came out, just strike me and then I saw the big snake. Just got stuck on my leg, so I tried to pull my leg. And then she just let go of me and my wife started screaming,” said Jerry Nerona.

Police responded, but officer kept their distance -- wary of the snake --wondering if it might be poisonous.

A state environmental police officer arrived and caught the snake quickly. He just picked it up and carried the python off.

“It looks to be about an eight to nine-foot ball python snake. Obviously it’s been handled before because it’s not too aggressive. It was slightly aggressive. I just threw it on the table and grabbed it by the neck and it came willingly,” said William Costello, Mass. Environmental Police.

Medical personnel urged the bite victim Jerry Nerona to go to the hospital, and he did, but the experts say the snake is not dangerous, given its size.

“Maybe a little bit, but they’re actually constrictors. They kill their prey by wrapping around it and suffocating it and swallowing it whole,” Costello said.

The python will most likely be returned to the owner because it is not illegal to own a snake in Massachusetts.
