MIDDLEBORO, Mass. (WHDH) -- A town meeting in Middleboro voted to ban swearing two weeks ago, which set in motion a law that could potentially cost a person $20 for publicly cursing.

On Monday a national libertarian activist held a protest to what he called “bullying” by the government.

Protesters were fired up about the new proposed law and they spoke out on the steps of town hall.

“I hope you have a wonderful [expletive] day,” said one protester.

The protest was organized by a libertarian blogger and former Marine, Adam Kokesh, from New Mexico. He called the idea behind the proposed law obscene.

“What we see here in Middleboro, Massachusetts is emblematic of what we have in government as a whole,” said Kokesh.

Most protesters were from out of town, which had the locals saying that they should just go home.

“Number one, they don’t live here and it’s almost like invading the town,” said one resident.

“They should just go home,” said one woman.

One protester and town hall meeting member who voted against the pending law wants more involvement from residents.

“If 183 people voted to vote this in and only 50 voted against it, where’s the rest of this town? Because there’s over 11,000 people in this town. Where’s the rest of these people?” asked Darlene Fretes.

During Monday’s protest, no one was fined because the law hasn’t gone into effect yet. The Attorney General still needs to review it and decide if it is constitutional.
