LAWRENCE, Mass. (WHDH) – A massive 4-alarm fire engulfed a Lawrence multi-family home Thursday.

Fire crews battled not only fire, but ice at the home located at 133 South Broadway Street. Fire crews said there are two apartments on the top floor and everyone made it out safely.

Crews from multiple towns responded to the scene just before 5 p.m. Bitter cold conditions left firefighters covered in ice as they used hoses to squelch the flames.

“The bad thing about this too is if you send the guys somewhere they can thaw out, then it’s worse; you start to get a chill,” said Chief Jack Bergeron, Lawrence Fire Department. “You actually got to stay like this until…you’re actually ready to leave the scene and you’re done.”

Crews had to plow and cover the roads with salt after the fire was put out.

The Red Cross said they are assisting the residents who were displaced by the fire.
