EVERETT, Mass. (WHDH) -- A scuffle between two adults in the stands at a high school basketball game caused the game to end early Tuesday night.

No players were involved in the dispute at Everett High School.

“We had to take the loss. We don't think it's fair,” said Devontae Davis, Everett basketball player.

Devontae Davis thinks his Everett team could have come from behind to win the game against their rival, Cambridge, but they never got those final shots.

“I don’t know who threw the first punch. All I saw was them hitting each other and they started rolling down the stands,” Davis said.

With three minutes still on the clock, the game was cut short after two adults started to brawl.

“Because of what transpired, we just wanted to make sure everyone was safe,” said Erick Naumann, Everett principal.

Everett High School's principal says coaches on both sides of the court made the right call. With police needed to calm the crowd, they agreed to just call it quits.

“At least it wasn't the kids, it wasn’t the students. They behaved themselves,” said Jim McCaron, who watched the game.

Despite the chaos near the court, Everett police say all the students in the stands and all the players kept their cool; a good lesson for the grownups before the next game.

“I think it was all kind of ridiculous, a big waste of time. I think it's a shame that stuff like that can happen,” said Sean McCarrick, an Everett student.

“They're adults. They should be more responsible than that,” Davis said.

Everett and Cambridge face off again in two weeks. Coaches and administrators from both schools met Wednesday morning to figure out how to keep the peace at the next game.
