WAKEFIELD, Mass. (WHDH) -- A Wakefield vocational school was evacuated Tuesday evening after a fire broke out in a classroom.

Crews responded to the Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational School on Hemlock Street at about 5:30 p.m.

A basketball game was going on in the school’s gymnasium at the time.

“My coach came in and starting screaming that there’s a fire and stuff like that. And I thought it was a joke but then he just started yelling and I just ran outside,” said one student.

“We all just figured that someone pulled the alarm and then we had to stop the game and everyone was running out, just being crazy,” said Sarah Curry, who attended the basketball game.

Crews say the fire began in the carpentry room and quickly spread to the ceiling and roof.

“You could see some of the smoke kind of. And once you came out you could see it through the windows,” said Emma Fitzpatrick, who attended the basketball game.

Firefighters cut through the roof to vent the smoke and flames as crews from Saugus, Lynnfield, Stoneham, and Reading helped scan the building for more hot spots.

Students say they don’t know when they’ll be able to go back inside their school.

“I tried to go back inside the school to get my Uggs, but I can’t get in,” said one student.

No injuries were reported, but the building suffered some damage and the varsity basketball game had to be postponed.

“We were winning 16-0. We’re going to have to start the whole game over I think,” said one student.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but crews say it does not appear it was intentionally set.
