RINDGE, N.H. (WHDH) -- A search was called off Thursday evening in New Hampshire after rescue crews found no signs that the driver of a snowmobile was in Emerson Pond where the machine broke through the ice.

At about 4:10 p.m., the Rindge Fire Department received a call from New Hampshire Fish and Game stating they had spotted a set of skis from a snowmobile sticking out of the ice at the pond, according to fire officials.

The Rindge Fire Department along with several other rescue crews responded to the scene. Dive teams from surrounding areas assisted in the search. The Winchester, New Hampshire Fire Department was called in for the use of a hovercraft.

Fire officials say an extensive investigation of Emerson Pond from both Red Gate Lane and Jay Drive sides of the pond included a door to door investigation with no reports of missing persons or knowledge of the snowmobile.

"Everybody that lived around the pond, their snowmobiles were accounted for, so we're still trying to determine if in fact there was somebody with the snowmobile," a fire official said.

The emergency responders obtained a registration number, make, model of the submerged snowmobile and identified frozen foot prints leading away from the area, according to fire officials.

"The footprints leading away that we found indicate that potentially somebody was riding on the ice, they fell through the ice, managed to get themselves out, and walked from the ice," a fire official said. "Neighbors indicate there was some snowmobile activity on New Year's Day, some indicated there was some activity yesterday that they had seen a snowmobile in the area. But nobody actually witnessed anything."

The search was called off at about 7 p.m. due to safety concerns and will resume Friday, by New Hampshire Fish and Game.
