SALISBURY, Mass. (WHDH) -- A woman was killed in a wrong way crash on a Salisbury, Newburyport bridge Monday night.

The driver is hospitalized and charged with motor vehicle homicide and drunk driving.

Police said the 50-year-old man driving the 1999 Lincoln Town Car on the back of that flatbed was drunk at the wheel on New Year’s Eve when he crashed head on into a 1997 Mercury Marquis driven by a 20-year-old man. He was injured, and according to investigators, is lucky to be alive.

Police said a woman riding in the front seat with the suspect was killed and a third person in the back seat of the Lincoln was injured.

It happened at 11:20 p.m. on the last day of 2012. Somehow the suspect got onto the Route 1 Gillis Bridge going the wrong direction, travelling northbound toward Salisbury in the southbound lane.

Impact came at the crest of the bridge. The younger man apparently caught sight of the Lincoln coming right at him at the very last second.

It's unclear how the driver got into the wrong lane of this bridge which has divided lanes, but at the adjacent apartment complex, there is access to the southbound lane and no sign warning it's one way only.

Police said they found open containers of liquor in the Lincoln. The suspect will be charged with OUI and motor vehicle homicide. The investigation is still ongoing.
