STONEHAM, Mass. (WHDH) -- A school administrator in Stoneham has been put on administrative leave following his arrest for corresponding with a minor on the Internet.

Steven Orloff, 47, of Framingham is the director of student services for Stoneham Public Schools. On Thursday he was put on leave following his arrest on charges he was corresponding with a 15-year-old girl from Maine over the Internet. Prosecutors said Orloff told the victim he was a 14-year-old boy and the two exchanged explicit photographs.

Dave Looney was across the street from the suspect’s house here on Potter Street when detectives showed up and arrested him.

“Shocked. I saw them beating on the door yesterday and I knew it wasn’t just a salesperson the way they were pounding. He came out and I didn’t pay much attention after that,” said Looney.

Orloff was arraigned in Framingham District Court on charges that included distribution of obscene matter.

No one answered the door at his Framingham home. Neighbors are stunned to hear he was arrested.

“Oh God, that’s sick,” said Carter Lowe, the suspect’s neighbor.

Orloff didn’t have direct contact with students, according to the superintendent.

District Attorney Gerry Leone issued a statement saying this is another stark reminder of how the Internet can be used by strangers to contact young vulnerable victims and place them in dangerous situations.

Parents picking up their kids at school were just hearing about Orloff's arrest.

“That’s not good at all. There’s a lot of not good things happening in the world,” said Paul Drake, a concerned parent.

According to court paperwork, Orloff is being held on $20,000 cash bail. If he posts that bail, he will be ordered to stay away from anyone under the age of 18. He is due back in court next month.
