BIDDEFORD, Maine (WHDH) -- Three men accused of paying a Maine zumba instructor for sex appeared in court on Wednesday. They are among dozens of men facing charges in the prostitution scandal.

Ken Fairbanks, 54, pled guilty to the charges and paid a $1,000 fine. Claude Palmer, 47, pled no contest and agreed to pay a $700 fine. Paul Main, 43, paid a $600 fine.

Three men in all admitted to paying for sex with Alexis Wright, who operated a Kennebunk zumba studio and allegedly operated a prostitution ring, along with co-defendant Mark Strong. Wright faces more than a hundred counts of prostitution and allegations she videotaped her encounters with her clients. Wright and Strong are free on bail awaiting trial.

One protester stood outside the courthouse holding a sign saying “decriminalize sex” on Wednesday.

“I’m standing in solidarity with the men who are being arraigned on the prostitution charges today. I decided that I was going to come out and say ‘Hey listen, it’s time to decriminalize the body. It’s time to say that sex work is okay,’” said Sarah Moon, who wants prostitution legalized.

If the three zumba johns who agreed to pay fines agree with the protester they did not share that with 7News. They avoided comments after their court appearances.

Initially 21 men were slated to appear in court Wednesday, 18 of them didn’t have to appear because they attained attorneys to answer pleas for them.

The prosecutor in the case did not want to appear on camera, but she said Fairbanks had to pay $1,000 and others had to pay less is because he allegedly had more than one zumba lesson.
