PLAISTOW, N.H. (WHDH) -- Police in New Hampshire continued searching for a woman and her boyfriend accused of abusing her three-year-old son. Police said the little boy was beaten to the point he had suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police announced Tuesday morning that the charges on the couple, mother Jessica Linscott and her boyfriend Roland Dow, were upgraded to felony charges. Investigators believed someone was helping them hide out and that whoever is helping them could also be charged.

“Currently, the charges are going to be upgraded to first-degree assault charges, which are felony charges,” said Lt. William Baldwin of Plaistow Police.

Plaistow Police said the toddler was beaten and burned at the hands of his mother and her boyfriend. Police said the couple dropped the boy off at the hospital saying that the toddler's injuries were self-inflicted. They provided the doctors a video that they said proves their story.

The boyfriend's grandmother said the injuries were from an operation and seizure.

Tips led police to several places in Haverhill, Massachusetts where Dow has family. They’re also searching for the couple in communities throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

“You can only stay hidden for so long. You are not doing that alone. Somebody is helping you. As you all know, the weather has been extremely cold at night. And you are not going to be hanging outside in that cold weather. You are not going to be able to survive every night like that,” said Lt. Baldwin.

Neighbors said they never saw anything unusual.

“Couple of weeks ago, the boyfriend, mother, and the little boy were outside. And the little boy seemed to be playing. He seemed to be okay,” said Roberta Reed, a neighbor. “I think it’s disgusting. It really is. But they seemed like a normal family when they were out there that day.

While the mother, Jessica Linscott, and her boyfriend, Roland Dow, are on the run, the mother's three-year-old son sits in the intensive care unit in the hospital. Police said his injuries were life-threatening, that even temporarily lost his eyesight. They said he is improving but has a long road ahead of him.

“Truly, truly, we are doing this for the sake of the child, to bring these people to justice,” said Lt. Baldwin.

Police had one message for the mother and her boyfriend. “Turn yourselves in.”

Police said they won't stop searching until they find them.

The toddler's condition is said to be improving.
