ANDOVER, Mass. (WHDH) -- A 17-year-old from Andover was arrested after he allegedly shot a man with a BB gun.

Dave Carter of Lawrence was hit in the hip while out for his daily walk.

“Felt a sting on my side and hip and I turned around and I saw kids through the bushes behind the house so I walked over right away and one of them had a rifle in his hand,” Carter said.

Andover Police say it happened along North Street. Investigators arrested a 17-year-old boy who's a student at Andover High School. The other two teens he was with weren't charged.

Carter says he walks the same five-mile route between Lawrence and Andover every day and the incident caught him by surprise.

Carter says what has him so concerned is the sidewalk where he was hit is usually very busy with parents pushing children in carriages.

“I see kids out there walking up and down the street. That would worry me, because if that ever hit a kid, forget about it,” said Carter.

“A pellet gun, a BB gun is still capable of inflicting injury to somebody. We’re very lucky it hit him in the lower portion of his body,” an officer.

Carter says he's not angry, just thankful the BB didn’t hit him in the head. He does have a message to parents who let their kids use BB guns.

“Don’t let your kids hang out with guns in the backyard unsupervised,” Carter said.
