PLAISTOW, N.H. (WHDH) -- A high school student is fighting for her right to ‘bare’ her arms.

The New Hampshire student was outraged when her principal told her that her shirt didn’t meet the new dress code.

“I thought this was something perfectly acceptable. Its cap sleeved. My shoulders are covered. I didn’t see any problem with it at all,” said Bitsy Skerry.

But on the first day of her junior year at Timberlane High School, Bitsy was told her top pushed the limits because she was showing too much shoulder.

“I don’t see how they’re a distraction because that’s what they keep stressing to me. Oh shoulders are a distraction in the classroom,” said Bitsy.

The honor student isn’t the only student at Timberland who is disappointed with this year’s stricter dress guidelines.

“It’s like you’re wearing a uniform,” said one student.

Bitsy decided to do something about the dress code. She launched what she called the campaign to ‘bare’ arms. She took her message to a school board meeting.

Bitsy even made a display showing women who show their shoulders.

“So as you can see Michelle Obama, Audrey Hepburn, Katie Couric…” said Bitsy.

But not everyone was sold. Some parents said the rules are there for good reason.

“I mean, I’m for uniforms. That way there’s no messing around,” said one parent.

“I think it sets the mood for education,” said a mother.

Still, Bitsy said banning that kind of blouse is beyond reasonable.

“I was shocked. I was afraid the whole day I’d get in trouble,” said Bitsy.

Bitsy’s campaign to ‘bare’ arms includes a petition with nearly 300 signatures on it -- enough support, according to the school superintendent, to look into the issue.

A school committee has not been assigned to decide whether the dress code needs a change.
