FAIRFAX, Vt. (AP) -- A Vermont man has been accused of driving his tractor while drunk and damaging a roadway.

The Franklin County sheriff's office says a deputy investigated a report of a crash Monday evening in Fairfax, an hour's drive northwest of Montpelier.

Police say the man told the deputy he'd been forced off the road and accidentally dropped a chopping device while driving for several hundred yards, damaging his tractor and the side of the road.

The deputy says the man was unsteady on his feet and had the smell of alcohol on his breath.

Police say the man's blood alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit for driving in the state.

The Burlington Free Press reports the man is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in St. Albans next month.
