HAVERHILL, Mass. (WHDH) -- A teenage boy was seriously injured following a dangerous fall from a Haverhill dam Wednesday evening.

He was fishing with friends when he fell six feet into the water below.

Police responded about 6 p.m. Wednesday and an officer worked to save the life of the boy who was lying next to the Millvalle Reservoir.

“He was able to put his head in traction and provide life-saving measures. When he did see his face, he had a large gash across his forehead,” said Lt. Robert Pistone, Haverhill Police Department.

The boy was medflighted to Boston’s Children’s Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

He was back at his home in Merrimac Friday.

His mother 7News, “We're very lucky. It could have been a lot worse. He suffered a very serious concussion and has lots of stitches, but all of the cat scans have shown he's okay.”

There is room to walk near the dam, but it could be a dangerous place for kids to hang out. Luckily, the boy only fell six feet into the pond. If he had been on the other side, he would have fallen 20 to 25 feet into the river bed.

“It was about a five-foot fall versus a much further fall,” Lt. Pistone said.

The reservoir sits near the Merrimac River. It has been a hangout for generations; popular with fishermen and teens looking for a place to gather.

City leaders concerned about the safety of others are considering putting up warnings, and the mayor admitted the no trespassing signs might need some attention.

“We're going to go up and look at the site. As I understand, signage is faded. We're going to tell people to use common sense and they shouldn’t be walking over things where they might fall but our number-one concern right now is the boy,” said James Fiorentini, Haverhill mayor.

The boy is said to be doing fine.
