LOWELL, Mass. (AP) -- A former University of Massachusetts Lowell student has pleaded not guilty to stealing dozens of textbooks and even two laptops from dorm rooms to pay for her drug habit.

Jessica Duplak was released on personal recognizance and ordered to stay away from the university after pleading not guilty to multiple larceny and breaking and entering charges.

Prosecutors say the 19-year-old Townsend woman stole up to 70 textbooks worth about $2,000 dating to January, and sold them at a city bookstore.

The Sun reports that authorities say she was addicted to prescription painkillers and had fallen into debt to her supplier and was afraid she'd get hurt.

Police say she told them she targeted chemistry textbooks because they were the most expensive.
