MALDEN, Mass. (WHDH) -- A car plunged into a swimming pool in Malden on Tuesday afternoon.

A man in his 80s plowed through his neighbor’s fence and landed in a backyard pool.

“I ran over, there’s an old man in the pool, sitting there. I don’t think he realized what happened,” said Tom Cheffro, who rescued the driver.

Cheffro said he had to think fast because the car was sinking and the man was buckled in.

“I got in, halfway into the water, tried to open the door. It wouldn’t open, so I had to kind of just push the window down…I undid his belt, reached in and pulled him out,” said Cheffro.

Cheffro said the man was trying to back into his driveway when he hit the gas instead of the brake.

“We were joking before the ambulance came, we were sitting in the chair joking,” said Cheffro. “We’re just going to see how many YouTube hits this gets.”

One neighbor said the elderly man was not supposed to be driving.

“His son didn’t want him to drive and the cardiologist said, ‘you know, you shouldn’t drive anymore,’ but he said he was just going to mail a letter,” said Betty Jeglinski, a neighbor.

He was in stable condition at the hospital as of Tuesday night.

No damage was done to the pool.

Police said the traffic department will review the incident Wednesday morning and decide if an imminent threat will be forwarded to the RMV which could mean the driver could lose his license.
