BOSCAWEN, N.H. (WHDH) -- A police chase, involving a stolen car, resulted in the death of 19-year-old Paige Garneau early Sunday morning.

Police said 18-year-old Robert Pitts was driving on I-93 South and crashed into several trees after failing to make the 17E exit just north of Concord.

One source, with knowledge of the investigation, said the black Chevrolet Impala belonged to the driver’s parents. The source said an off-duty police officer spotted the car in the Northfield area and reported it to police before pursuing the car.

The 10-mile chase reached the speed of approximately 65 mph. Garneau, the lone passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at Concord Hospital. Flowers now mark the place where she died.

Friends of Garneau are shocked to learn of their friend’s untimely death.

“It honestly, it didn’t feel real at first. I mean when her father called me, it hit home,” said Rebecca Shambo. “It’s a loss. It really is. Nineteen years old. What can you do? You haven’t lived when you’re 19. You really haven’t.”

Pitts was also transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday and is facing charges of negligent homicide.
