CLINTON, Maine (WHDH) -- A 10-year-old from Maine was charged with killing a three-month-old child her mother was babysitting.

The 10-year-old is the youngest child to be charged with manslaughter in Maine in a quarter of a century.

Three-month-old Brooklyn Foss Greenaway died last month.

Her mother said she was left at a baby-sitter's home.

The baby-sitter's daughter is the one accused in the death.

An autopsy showed Brooklyn Greenaway died from "suffocation".

State police said traces of medicine prescribed to the 10-year-old were also found in the baby's system.

"It would have been different if it would have been like SIDS or something along those lines, but it wasn't. it was preventable. And that's what's frustrating," said Nicole Greenaway, Brooklyn’s mother.

The Department of Public Safety has not discussed the cause of death in this case.

The 10-year-old will appear in juvenile court to face manslaughter charges in October.
