Haverhill child recovering after TV falls on him
HAVERHILL, Mass. (WHDH) -- A 3-year-old was hurt when a television fell on top of him in a Haverhill home.
The boy was home recovering Wednesday night and his parents say they've learned one frightening lesson.
Jayvien Ramos was home from the hospital after an old and heavy TV came crashing down on his head.
The only visible sign of what happened to him was a black and blue eye.
“He’s doing much better, thank God,” said Carmen Mille, Jayvien’s mother.
Mille says she was in the living room when she heard the TV come crashing down off a dresser.
“He was looking for his pacifier so he just climbed the bureau, he just opened the drawers and he was just climbing to get the pacifier. The TV fell on top of him and then I just came outside rushing I just gave him to my friend and she was the one that did most everything,” Mille said.
“I heard the screaming and when I came up to that point right there she came screaming and she gave me the baby,” said Kathy Cruz, a neighbor.
Kathy Cruz quickly jumped into action.
“When I looked at him he was unconscious and his eyes were in the middle and when I looked at him they rolled back and I just ran outside with him,” Cruz said. “I told her to get cold water. We put cold water on him and that didn't work. His tongue was kind of going in the back of his the mouth and I just stuck my finger in the back of his mouth and held it.”
The ambulance showed up and Jayvien was taken by helicopter to a Boston hospital.
“He got a concussion and everything and he has two blood clots in his head so like the medicine they've been giving him is going to go away for him. But the skull is fine, no damage nothing,” Mille said.
Despite everything that happened, the family said they did learn an important lesson.
“Just to keep watching, just be on top of everything don't leave him by himself or nothing at all,” Mille said.
And the family says they're also in the market for a new, lighter TV that won’t be put on this stand.
