Swim team discovers body in Lowell HS pool

LOWELL, Mass. (WHDH) -- A group of teenage swimmers found the body of a teenage boy who had apparently drowned in the Lowell High School pool Monday evening.
The teenagers, who are part of the New Wave Swim Club, were preparing for swim practice. They entered the field house at the high school and discovered the body of 17-year-old Eddie Gayyean.
Gayyean's family said he moved to the area from Liberia in April and was dropping off a form at the high school the morning of the incident.
“We do not know how or why this individual was in that area, the circumstances that led to him being in the pool and to -- what appears to be -- a drowning,” said Dep. Supt. Arthur Ryan Jr. of the Lowell Police Department.
The president of the swim club said they're all traumatized by what they found.
“We are looking at all the security features of the school, we’re looking at any security surveillance footage that may be available to us,” said Ryan.
A school board member said the field house where the pool is located does have security cameras.
“At this point in time there is nothing that we have seen -- again, preliminarily-- that would lead us to believe foul play was involved,” said Ryan.
The New Wave Swim Club said no swimmers got into the pool. The victim is not affiliated with the club.
