LAWRENCE, Mass. (WHDH) -- A Lawrence woman was shot outside her home while she was holding her one-month-old grandchild Monday.

Police told 7News the grandmother was sitting on her porch holding the baby when a man came up to the house and started shooting.

“She heard two shots after the other one. She just hold the baby, the bottle went flying,” said the victim’s daughter.

The victim’s daughter, who did not want to be identified, said her mother was shot while holding the infant.

“My mom went running upstairs. She said, ‘oh, I got shot,’” the victim’s daughter said.

The victim’s daughter said her mother held the infant tight to her chest and when she turned to protect the child, she was shot in the shoulder.

“She’s like, ‘just check the baby, just check the baby. Forget about me, just check the baby,’” the victim’s daughter said.

Police say they believe the shooting was not random, and the woman and her grandchild were not the intended targets. Police also say they believe the shooting to be gang related.

“She said she saw him walk past and she didn’t think anything of it and then he walked back and that’s when he pulled out a gun and started firing,” said Chief John Romero, Lawrence Police Department.

“He just crazily started shooting a gun at her and one went through the house and hit the washing machine. Luckily my mom saved her granddaughter -- my niece. She’s only a month today, and he was going to take a whole life away from a baby,” the victim’s daughter said.

Police say the grandmother is expected to be fine.
