MANCHESTER, N.H. (WHDH) -- A New Hampshire city official turned himself into police after a woman claimed he sexually assaulted her.

Alderman Russell Ouellette was arrested Monday and charged with sexual assault, simple assault and false imprisonment. Manchester's mayor has called for his resignation.

Details on the incident remain scarce, but the Hillsborough County attorney’s office said the charges stem from a July 12 event when a woman called 911 in the early morning from a pickup truck driven by Ouellette. Authorities say that he would not allow the woman to get out of the truck.

"She attempted to take her seat belt off. He pushed it back down we believe, and kept driving so that she was kept in the car," said Dennis Hogan, Hillsborough County attorney.

The woman told the dispatcher that she was in a “bad situation.” Officers located Ouellette and the woman.

Ouellette’s attorney said he and his client are working with police to understand the scope of the charges.

Manchester's mayor is calling for Ouellette's resignation.

"I think that it would be very difficult to service constituents with his mind possibly being somewhere else and I think he needs to go out and put his best foot forward and fight this to the very bitter end," said Mayor Ted Gatsas, Manchester, New Hampshire.

Ouellette was released Monday afternoon on $10,000 bail. He is due back in court on Thursday.
