Police search for suspects after Haverhill shooting

HAVERHILL, Mass. (WHDH) -- Two people died and two were injured after an overnight shooting in Haverhill.
A neighborhood turned into a crime scene overnight -- bullet casings and clothes belonging to victims littered River Street after two men were shot and killed Monday night.
“I heard four [shots]. I heard bang, bang, bang, a little hesitation, then bang, one more,” said Pauline Cardarelli, a neighbor.
One of the victims, 19-year-old William Melchionda lived on River Street. His friend affectionately called him Little Billy saying they always knew him as a nice guy. Anndy Guzman, 20, of Lawrence was also killed. At least two other people were shot and injured.
Police used canines and a helicopter to search for suspects. One neighbor said she saw a car speeding away and then spotted the young men lying on the ground.
“There was a young man laying down in front of that other house there where they found the young man shot. And there were two young fellas on the front lawn…I heard them say ‘Stay down, get down…Don’t get up,’” said Cardarelli.
One of the shooting victims spoke out Tuesday night as he visited the scene where his friend died.
"I just got shot in the chest twice and I'm lucky to be alive," the victim said.
Still concerned for his life, the victim didn't want to be identified.
"It should have been me other than him because I'm 28. The kid's 19 years old. The kid saved everybody's life. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be alive," the victim said. "He made sure everybody was okay and then he ran out trying to protect other people."
Investigators armed with a search warrant looked for evidence both on the street and in the home.
Haverhill’s mayor said the shooting has shattered the neighborhood.
“This has been a quiet and safe community and that’s how we want to keep it. We’ll take whatever steps are necessary, whatever resources are necessary to make sure that our residents remain protected,” said Mayor James Fiorentini.
Police are not releasing information on a possible motive.
The two people who were shot sustained non-life threatening injuries.
