Lynn man dies after being shot by police in confrontation

LYNN, Mass. (WHDH) -- Officials say a Lynn man was shot and killed by police after the car he was inside allegedly rammed a police vehicle.
A 23-year-old man died after police say they shot him twice just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday. An officer said he saw Brandon Payne walking near Essex Street carrying what he believed to be a hidden shotgun. Payne then got inside a car with a second car following them.
Police said that’s when they tried to stop the two cars with both marked and unmarked police cars. Officials said Payne’s car then rammed a police car, prompting officers to fire.
A shotgun and a handgun were later found at the scene.
The three other suspects were taken into custody and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. Payne died before 6 a.m. Monday.
Payne’s record as an adult includes nearly a dozen criminal cases, accusing him of crimes ranging from assault and battery to home invasion.
Payne’s grandmother called him a caring grandson.
“I don’t know what he did outside. I only know when he come around grandma he was a nice boy,” said Pearline Miller, Payne’s grandmother.
She prayed over her grandson Monday morning before he passed away and said it is still too soon to blame anyone.
“All we want to do is try to get ready to bury him and whatever comes, it comes. But right now we don’t have time to point our fingers right now,” said Miller.
Payne left behind three children.
The investigation into what happened continues.
