GRAFTON, N.H. (AP) -- New Hampshire expects a banner year for bear complaints.

Hungry bruins awakened by an early spring are moving into backyards to forage because summer berries have not yet come on.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game department expects to get more than twice as many complaints of bear activity this year than last. Already a wayward bear in Manchester was tranquilized and relocated, and a woman in Grafton reported she was attacked.

Bears also have crossed paths with people in Vermont, Maine, and Massachusetts.

A bear biologist with the department, Andrew Timmins, says bears are just looking for food, not trouble. He predicts New Hampshire will see more than 1,000 bear complaints this year, but he says they should drop off as berries ripen and plants green up.
