LEOMINSTER, Mass. (WHDH) -- A trip to the mall landed a Leominster woman behind bars after she allegedly left a child alone in a hot car for 30 minutes.

Ruth Allende was arraigned Monday after leaving her 5-month-old niece in a car when she went inside Old Navy on Sunday at around 5:45 p.m. Mall security found the niece alone in the car.

Police said when the temperature when this happened was more than 80 degrees.

“The Leominster police department was able to gain entry into a locked motor vehicle. They did discover a five month old sleeping inside the vehicle, who was covered in sweat,” said prosecutors.

Police said Allende then began to scream and cry, drawing a crowd and ignoring calls from police to calm down.

Allende was charged with reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct.

The baby is with protective services.
