LAWRENCE, Mass. (WHDH) -- A pregnant woman was the target of a brutal attack in Lawrence. She says a man knocked her down from behind as she left her doctor's office.

At 4 foot 9 inches tall, she's certainly not an imposing figure.

Nilckea Ortiz’s most distinguishing feature: her baby bump. She's due next month, but even that didn't stop a robber from targeting her.

“I was just walking and I felt somebody grab me from behind and I just fell to the floor,” Ortiz said.

Ortiz was walking home from her doctor in Lawrence Monday afternoon when a man knocked her to the ground and started tugging at her backpack.

“The first couple seconds, I was screaming and trying to swing back, after that I was just trying to take the bag off,” Ortiz said.

She says the man was kicking her in the head, and as he tried to take the bag, he ended up dragging her through some of a parking lot.

“It’s unbelievable that somebody would attack anyone, let alone a seven-month pregnant woman and to knock her to the ground and get her pocketbook,” said Chief John Romero, Lawrence Police Department.

The robber got away with the backpack -- inside was few bucks and a couple books.

“She indicated he might have been a homeless person, because she said he had an odor to him and appeared very dirty, we're checking that angle as well,” said Chief Romero.

Ortiz was immediately taken to the hospital. She has a sprained ankle and a sore neck.

Ortiz says when she was getting kicked, she was protecting her face and her belly.

She says doctors did an ultrasound and the baby is fine.

“I was scared, because I was just like, God forbid anything happens, I would have went crazy,” said Ortiz.

No arrests have been made.
