HUDSON, Mass. (WHDH) -- A machete got lodged into the front bumper of a car while traveling down Interstate 495 on Monday.

“What looks like happened is it came off the road just high enough that it entered, the handle first, this way and then slapped back because you can see the perfect outline of the machete that was made on the car,” said Fred Dolan. “I saw a car in front of me kick up this black object off the road -- it looked like a piece of a tire -- I hit it pretty hard.”

Dolan kept driving on I-495 another 40 miles, unaware of his new front ornament.

“I got out at the store. I walked around the front of the car expected to see a broken headlight or some type of damage -- and sticking straight out is a 2-foot long machete,” said Dolan. “I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was a guy coming out of the store with his family. He looked down at me, he looked at that. He couldn’t believe his eyes either.”

Dolan travels about 50 miles to and from work daily. His car has seen its fair share of damage, so he’s keeping the machete hole.

Dolan has friends in law enforcement and he showed them the photo of the machete sticking out of his car. He said it was nothing like they’d ever seen before.

“We were talking a foot up and a foot to the left…Totally different story,” said Dolan. “We’d be talking about one of those freaky accidents, tragedy potentially.”

No one knows how the machete ended up in the middle of the highway. It’s presumed to have fallen off work truck. As for the machete, Dolan said he is not keeping it with his children around.
